The Weekly (C)Wrap-Up - Lost In Translation?!"

Well it's finally Friday well actually not for me I have to work Saturday too but it is still Friday and it is time for the Weekly (C) Wrap-Up! This is going to be a little rushed because I do have to work today and normally I am off and can take my time with this anywho might as well get busy and see how much crap we can uncover in a couple of hours. No problems with these criminals in charge...

Lost in Translation!?

Maybe Barack's first foreign visit should have been to China. Apparently the Chinese government is not impressed that a black man has a good chance of becoming President of the US (maybe they already know the results) because they have actually banned blacks from being served at bars on Beijing...NO bullshit! Or is it?! I happened to be watching the news this am and I noticed that Ann nor Matt said anything about the ban and why is this the first I am hearing about this when the ban went in 10 days ago supposedly? Lost in translation?! From the Shanghiist:

More on the Beijing bar ban confusion

More on the Beijing bar ban confusionTom Miller of the SCMP has been the center of many heated online discussions of late as a result of his article last Friday on bar owners in Sanlitun being asked to deny service to black patrons. What looked like an attempt to add credibility to his anonymous claims, he followed up with an article on Saturday claiming another anonymous source, this time a police officer, who denied that bars were instructed to deny service to patrons of African descent. His article though, still maintained that:

...another bar owner had been verbally warned by Public Security Bureau officers not to serve customers of Mongolian and African descent, while other bars had been ordered to sign chopped pledges to keep to curfews, not allow the illegal sale of drugs, and refuse certain customers.

According to Beijing Boyce, who has reported his independent findings about the SCMP claims on his blog, this might be just a case of miscommunication. Through his investigations, his sources tell him that bar owners were indeed asked to:

monitor black patrons. He [the bar owner] said the police told the reps that drug dealers are predominantly black in the area. He said the police did not ask bar owners to ban blacks.

As you can imagine, the story has spread like wildfire across blogs as well as more established media outlets. Even Shanghaiist's story was echoed verbatim on a Chinese blog. Not surprisingly though, while news outlets like The Age and Financial Times picked up the story in the context of the Beijing Olympics being "no-fun", latter commentary was less about the likelihood of Africans and Mongolians being turned away from bars but more about the SCMP's journalism.

Jeremy Goldkorn of Danwei comments:

...it seems highly unlikely that anyone with any real authority would "secretly" plan "to ban black people" from the city's bars.

The sources of the South China Morning Post are anonymous, and the paper does not seem to have any physical evidence to support the article.

Liam Fitspatrick from Time (in association with CNN) also recognises that:

The story, by Tom Miller and Peter Simpson, quotes an anonymous bar owner as saying that security officers forced him to sign a pledge that required him to prevent black people from entering his premises. A nameless “black British national” is also quoted, expressing his shock and disappointment.

The anonymity of the sources is also noticed by veteran blogger and China watcher Fons Tuinstra in the China Herald:

The proof of this was pretty flimsy: one anonymous bar-owner at Sanlitun. I found the article remarkable for two reasons. First, because of its firm anti-China tone, while the South China Morning Post had adopted (as far as I could read them) since 1997 a pro-China tone that would even be considered nauseating by the editors of the China Daily.
Second, it fitted nicely into their old tradition in coming with firm allegations, based on nothing, so they could sell the next day their paper again with a firm denial of a false rumor they had created themselves in the first place.

Fons then continues to post his FriendFeed conversations with other China netizens who also find the SCMP report a little hard to swallow.

The most convincing debunking of this story has been the hard work of Beijing nightlife blogger Beijing Boyce who actually went bar to bar to to speak to bar owners about this potential ban. Boyce suggests that the "black" referred to may not actually be about skin color but "bad elements". The Chinese term for organized crime syndicates or the triads is 黑社会 (literally black society). MORE!

So this just might be a mistranslation as is common and the black they are referring to is the black, meaning evil and dark crime element. I won't get into the psychological ramifications because that is another blog entirely. If this were true I would think it would be getting a lot more traction than it has in the news and on the political blogs. I guess we will find out, however I did come across an article that could be misconstrued as meaning black people...From asianews.it:

07/18/2008 17:12
CHINA
Beijing 2008: bars forbidden to serve "blacks" and Mongolians, outdoor tables banned
Many bans and restrictions, with serious inconveniences for the population. The first "leaks" on the grandiose inauguration on August 8, with an unprecedented fireworks display.

Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) - For "reasons of safety", bars are forbidden to serve "blacks"" and Mongolians or place tables in the street. Street musicians are being banned, and so is buying medicines containing "stimulants" without a prescription. Prohibitions are on the rise for the Olympic capital, while the first leaks reveal a grandiose fireworks display for the inauguration.

Bar owners around the Workers' Stadium in downtown Beijing say that public security officials are telling them not to let in "blacks" and Mongolians, and many of them have even had to sign a pledge. The official reason is the fight against drugs and prostitution, dominated in the past by Mongolians and persons of colour. Moreover, public places must close by 2 a.m., for security reasons, and the bar owners are being asked to remind their clients that they must always have an identification document with them. There is even doubt over whether the bars within a radius of two kilometres from the Olympic buildings will be able operate, or whether they will have to shut down for the entire period. In some areas, tables are not permitted outside, because "the presence of too many foreigners gathered outside could create problems". There is also an attempt to shut down outdoor musical concerts, to prevent disorder. MORE!

Now reading through this article one could come to the conclusion that the Chinese government did indeed mean black people and that there is some sort of ban but...

Moving on...

Another bunch of silliness that clogged the airwaves and all the talking heads shows was Barack's statement about inflating tires to save gas...From Crooks & Liars:

Since when do Republicans oppose routine auto maintenance?

Barack Obama reminded an audience yesterday that American consumers can save money and improve fuel efficiency by keeping their tires inflated and getting regular tune-ups. I thought this was just common sense, and one of those simple steps that everyone already knew about.

Apparently, Republicans have decided that it’s worthy of mockery.

“[Obama] suggested we put air in our tires to save on gas,” McCain told a group of voters. “My friends, let’s do that, but do you think that’s enough to break our dependence on Middle Eastern oil? I don’t think so.” MORE!

Then of course all of the idiots went on silly tirades like this is the craziest thing that they ever heard in their lives trying to deflect from the fact that this is standard knowledge and has been since the government has been regulating emissions and gas mileage standards.

Here is the payoff:
“Obama said a couple of days ago says we all should inflate our tires. I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it,” McCain said.
Jon Stewart is going to lead off the drilling vs Inflating tires debate, because if you remember drilling is not going to produce and visible gains for about 10 years! But somehow that number magically just continues to decrease. Watch:

Isn't that a test question to get a license now a days? Q) "What is the best way to keep you car performing at optimal condition and getting the advertised gas mileage?" A) Keep tires inflated and get regular maintenance and tune-ups! Silly republicons!

Ohhhh and it get's a lot sillier...From Crooks & Liars:
House Republican endorses ‘the Paris Hilton plan’ on energy

We’re well past the point at which congressional Republicans have jumped the shark, but let’s pause to appreciate the fact that at least one leading GOP lawmaker is now looking to a fake ad by a 27-year-old heiress/reality-show star as a serious source of public policy.

The lines between celebrity and politician blurred into a haze Thursday at a Republican news conference, as one congressman began pushing Paris Hilton’s “plan” on energy.

“Let’s bring up the Paris Hilton plan,” goaded Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas. […] “Even Paris Hilton had an energy plan that she’s talking about,” said Burgess, seizing a chance to make Democrats look lackluster on the issue.

The Texas congressman tried to put Hilton in the Republican camp, claiming her words mirrored current GOP legislation known as the “No More Excuses Energy Act”. But, while that proposal does allow offshore drilling, a congressional summary shows it does not contain tax credits to encourage new automobile technology.

For crying out loud, Paris Hilton is not a policy expert. She wasn’t seriously offering an energy proposal for members of Congress to embrace as an actual solution. MORE!

You Cannot Make This Shit Up!! Speaking of making shit up. How about that latest CSI: FBI or is it Law and Order: Criminal Intent? Wait...I am way off this is an episode of the Fall Guy not the stunt guy but the patsy...From Crooks & Liars:

Countdown: Nothing About The FBI’s Anthrax Story Adds Up

Keith interviewed investigative journalist Gerald Posner last night, who did a great job of shattering all of the inconsistencies and improbabilities in the FBI’s official case against alleged anthrax killer Bruce Ivins.

The strongest evidence they have going for them is also their Achilles‘ heel and that he‘s psychological profile. That fact that he‘s very unstable, that he was someone who was an alcoholic, that he might wanted to have the vaccine continue to go along, but that‘s also the fact that he could have been set up as a cutout or puppet or used by a group of people who wanted the anthrax out there.

They also knew about his weak psychological profile. How was he employed with the most secret biological warfare lab in the United States with this type of background that we now hear about? That they should have known about from day one. The Defense Department should hang its head in shame.

For even more on this story, see Glenn Greenwald’s extensive coverage:

I see this as a potential conspiracy corner post coming out of this one. Because there is supposedly a lot more to it now. From Crooks & Liars:

Anthrax Bruce Ivins wins highest civilian award from Defense Dept. in March, 2003

I’d love for somebody to explain this one to me. I know he was working on the anthrax vaccine, but who nominated Ivins for this award? This item has not been picked up by the press like it should have. C&L’s Mark Groubert tells me via email:

On March 14th, 2003 Bruce Ivins, the alleged anthrax killer and anthrax vaccine inventor, was awarded the highest civilian honor of the Pentagon by Army Secretary Thomas White. Exceptional Civilian Service Award

The LA Times:

At a Pentagon ceremony on March 14, 2003, Ivins and two colleagues from USAMRIID were bestowed the Decoration of Exceptional Civilian Service, the highest honor given to nonmilitary employees of the Defense Department. “Awards are nice,” Ivins said in accepting the honor. “But the real satisfaction is knowing the vaccine is back on line.

As David Willman reports:

Bruce E. Ivins, the government biodefense scientist linked to the deadly anthrax mailings of 2001, stood to gain financially from massive federal spending in the fear-filled aftermath of those killings, the Los Angeles Times has learned.

Ivins is listed as a co-inventor on two patents for a genetically engineered anthrax vaccine, federal records show. Separately, Ivins also is listed as a co-inventor on an application to patent an additive for various biodefense vaccines...read on

On April 26th, 2003, almost a month after White gave Ivins the award, the Army Secretary was fired by Donald Rumsfeld supposedly for this:

Last year, White locked horns with Rumsfeld over the Pentagon’s decision to cancel one of the Army’s pet projects, the $11 billion Crusader artillery system.

The defense secretary was said to be furious about an Army lobbying campaign that attempted to save the Crusader by circulating a memo of “talking points” on Capitol Hill, arguing that killing the program would “put soldiers at risk.” As secretary of the Army, White’s job was mainly to make sure the Army is properly equipped and ready to respond during a war. He oversees the Army’s chief of staff, Gen. Eric Shinseki.

Obviously this is a weird coincidence to me, but still interesting. I would think that winning this award would help deflect scrutiny away from Ivins. MORE!

Who wrote this screenplay?! It should make a good movie it has several plot turns and twists some political intrigue, a bogus storyline to throw ya off and some known unknowns, corruption at high levels. oliver Stone could have a field day with this one.

We are going to file this next article in the Feel Safer Now Category?! Again from Crooks & Liars:
BREAKING: Hamdan convicted on five counts of supporting terrorism

Osama bin Laden’s alleged driver, Salim Hamdan, has just been convicted on five counts of supporting a terror organization. Considering that the Pentagon planned on holding him indefinitely regardless of the verdict, does it really matter all that much?

video_wmv Download | video_mov Download |

CNN:

A U.S. military jury found Osama Bin Laden’s former driver guilty of five counts of material support to a terror organization in the September 11, 2001, attacks.

In a split verdict, jurors found Salim Hamdan not guilty of conspiracy to aid a terror organization, in this case al Qaeda.

The trial is being held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility where he is being held.

Prosecutors allege that Hamdan, who was picked up in November 2001 in Afghanistan, overheard conversations about 9/11 and had other information that showed he was part of Osama bin Laden’s inner circle and aided and abetted the attacks.

Hamdan faces life in prison and his lawyers are already planning to appeal.

The National Security Network weighs in:

HAMDAN VERIDCT: We Waited Seven Years For This?

“Today’s verdict does little if anything to advance American security. The entire process raises fundamental questions about the administration’s disregard for our constitutional values and may well do America more harm than good in the court of world opinion. It took seven years for the Bush administration’s military commissions system to get its first conviction for a crime that is regularly prosecuted in federal court. And when it did, it was a driver who even the administration acknowledges did not participate in the planning or execution of any terrorist attacks. Surely there is a better way to protect America and bring terrorists to justice while adhering to the constitutional values that have kept us safe and strong for 200 years.”

I can also see these as potential 24 Episodes. Is Jack Bauer still in business?! Here is the absurdity in all of this...They were gonna hold him indefinitely anyway...From Thinkprogress:

Hamdan sentenced to 5.5 years in prison, though he may still be detained indefinitely.

Yesterday, Salim Ahmed Hamdan was found guilty of material support for terrorism, after being held in U.S. custody for seven years. Today, the military court at Guantanamo sentenced him to five and a half years in prison; the prosecution had asked for a minimum 30-year sentence. The Guardian notes, however, that Hamdan will not necessarily be free in five years:

No matter what penalty Hamdan had received, he is subject to possible indefinite detention by the US military.

The AP adds:

The judge, Navy Capt. Keith Allred, said he did not know what would happen to Hamdan once his sentence is complete, but said he would likely be eligible for the same administrative review process as other prisoners.

Last month, Attorney General Michael Mukasey argued the U.S. should be able to imprison detainees “for the duration of the conflict” with “al Qaeda, the Taliban, and associated organizations.”

Yup I feel a lot safer now /snark! Speaking of feeling safer did you guy's hear about this one in my home state of Mary's land ?!? This is good! Either the feds don't like this mayor or there is something deeper going on here...From My Way News(AP):

BERWYN HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) - Mayor Cheye Calvo got home from work, saw a package addressed to his wife on the front porch and brought it inside, putting it on a table. Suddenly, police with guns drawn kicked in the door and stormed in, shooting to death the couple's two dogs and seizing the unopened package.

In it were 32 pounds of marijuana. But the drugs evidently didn't belong to the couple.

Police say the couple appeared to be innocent victims of a scheme by two men to smuggle millions of dollars worth of marijuana by having it delivered to about a half-dozen unsuspecting recipients.

The two men under arrest include a FedEx deliveryman; investigators said the deliveryman would drop off a package outside a home, and the other man would come by a short time later and pick it up.

A furious Calvo said Thursday that he and his wife, Trinity Tomsic, are asking the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the July 29 raid.

"Trinity was an innocent victim and random victim," Calvo said outside his two-story, red-brick house in this middle-class Washington suburb of about 3,000 people. "We were harmed by the very people who took an oath to protect us."

Calvo insisted the couple's two black Labradors were gentle creatures and said police apparently killed them "for sport," gunning down one of them as it was running away. MORE!

They shot the man's dogs! Had his mother-in-law in hand cuffs on the floor (which for most mother-in-laws that is the best way to control them..sorry I couldn't help it!) eye to eye with a dead dog. The smaller dog was running away! Time to check the good mayors voting records to see who he pissed off! The local PG police dept was not even included in the investigation or the raid. Which by the way was a no knock raid. The mayor said he didn't get to see the warrant until 72 hours later. I actually know someone who works with the mayor's wife and she is really shook up. If they were black this might not be about the murder of the dogs but maybe about the murder of the mayor and his family members. I could be nit picking but the dogs were black...Not too mention she said this herself. Welcome to Black America where this is a daily occurrence...This is as bad as when they framed a 92 year old woman by planting weed on her after they raided the wrong house...The bust in granny unloaded on them thinking they were burgurlars they returned fire, killed her and then planted weed on her...Beyond Belief!

Lot of slimy stuff going on out there isn't it?! What's next?! More energy blues and bad news for the working man...From Thinkprogress:

Across the country, “utility shut-offs for customers behind on their energy bills are increasing…reaching 50% or more in some hard-hit areas.” The increase is the result of an “economic double whammy of high gasoline prices and rising utility bills” in a “sagging economy.”

The budget deficit for fiscal year 2008 will be “around $400 billion,” according to a new Congressional Budget Office estimate. CBO’s prediction is “slightly higher than the White House’s deficit estimate of $389 billion,” both of which “approach the record-breaking deficit suffered in fiscal 2004 of $412.7 billion.” Last month, the White House predicted the deficit could reach nearly $490 billion in fiscal year 2009.

Jobless claims hit six-year high.

The Department of Labor announced today that “the number of newly laid off people signing up for jobless benefits last week climbed to its highest point in more than six years as companies cut back given the faltering economy.” Unemployment insurance applications “rose by a seasonally adjusted 7,000 to 455,000″ last week, which is “worse than analysts expected.” The Labor Department had initially forecast that jobless claims would drop to 430,000.

Here's another little snippet to brighten your day /snark...From Yahoo News (AP):

Fannie Mae loses $2.3B in quarter as defaults rise

WASHINGTON - Mortgage finance company Fannie Mae swung to a second-quarter loss that was more than triple what Wall Street expected as conditions in the housing market continued to deteriorate.

The Washington-based company, the largest U.S. buyer and backer of home loans, said Friday it lost $2.3 billion, or $2.54 a share, for the quarter that ended June 30. The loss compares with profit of $1.95 billion, or $1.86 a share, in the period last year.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had expected a loss of just 68 cents a share.

And it appears more bad news is ahead. MORE!

Which of course means more bad news for me and you. we are already a trillion in debt from the first bailing out of Fannie & Freddie...Welcome to New America Where It Just Keeps Raining (it's acid rain too)!

Did you guy's see this? I posted it yesterday and it was meant as a little humor, dare I say it ...satire?!

[greenberg21.jpg]

It would be a lot more funny if it wasn't so true and prophetic.

Alrighty then...Time for the Asshole of the Week! As usual there was a robust fight for the top spot and it is going to be another toss up. First and foremost and front and center is this guy http://images.stltoday.com/stltoday/resources/theodoremuschany.jpg

His name is Theodore Muschany. From STLToday:

State rep charged with assaulting teen

The alleged victim is the daughter of a state employee. The girl’s mother and Muschany -– who is married and has two children -- were romantically involved, the woman said.

A Cole County grand jury returned an indictment today charging Muschany with the Class C felony of "deviate sexual assault." The indictment identifies the victim only by initials. It says that on May 17, Muschany "had deviate sexual intercourse" with the girl, "knowing that he did so without" her consent.

Muschany, 42, was booked into the Cole County Jail today at 2:50 and he was released after posting a $5,000 bond. If convicted, Muschany faces a fine of up to $5,000 and a prison term of up to 7 years. MORE!
He has gone with the old rethugliclan standby of going to spend more time with his family. These guy's are just slugs of the earth they really are! Next slug is a real slug indeed, he even looks like one! Jabba the Druggie Limpballs. Rush makes the list for this, from Thinkprogress:

Limbaugh compares civil rights organizations to al-Sadr: They both ‘disrupt the society.’

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr “intends to disarm his once-dominant Mahdi Army militia and remake it as a social-services organization.” Commenting on the article on his radio show yesterday, right-wing talker Rush Limbaugh joked that Sadr, whom he calls “Mookie,” had “thrown his hands in with the left over there” and that “his boys are going to become community organizers.” Limbaugh then compared Sadr to American civil rights organizations, saying they are both intent on “disrupting the society“:

Seriously, that’s what he’s going to do. They’re going to — social services, education, social justice. I guess Mookie’s thrown his hands in with the left over there. He’s going to throw down the weapons and start disrupting the society much like the civil rights organizations here in this country have tried to do to ours.

We have a late entry into the voting this week and that is former(?) Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for of all things; assualt. From Yahoo News:

DETROIT - Michigan's attorney general says he's bringing assault charges against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick after the mayor had a physical confrontation with a detective trying to deliver a subpoena.

The mayor faces two counts of assaulting or obstructing a police officer in the furtherance of their duties. Each felony count brings up to 2 years in prison or a fine of $2,000.

The mayor already faces perjury, official misconduct and obstruction of justice charges stemming from his testimony in a civil trial last year.

Attorney General Mike Cox announced the charges at a press conference in Detroit on Friday.

Kilpatrick was ordered jailed Thursday for violating his bond, but was released on appeal earlier Friday.

This guy needs to just go away! This next story is truly sad and maybe this person does have a serious problem and closing down Starbucks coffee shops is a good thing...From Yahoo News:

Chicago cop suspended for demanding free Starbucks

CHICAGO - A Chicago police officer has been suspended for 15 months for demanding free coffee and baked goods from six different Starbucks.

Officer Barbara Nevers, a 14-year veteran, has also been ordered to undergo counseling.

The Police Board ruled in May that 55-year-old Nevers intimidated Starbucks employees by screaming at them and flashing her badge, handcuffs or gun when they wanted her to pay. The board released its findings Thursday.

All of those guy's for this:

From Thinkprogress:

House Republicans plan to continue their political stunts on oil drilling “for at least the next two weeks — right up to the start of the Democratic Convention in Denver” on Aug. 25. The memo from House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) to GOP members said that their “protest is making history.”

Now while not nominated this week we do have to hand out an honorable mention to "Idiot of the week" Glenn Beck: from Thinkprogress:

Beck: Batman vindicates Bush’s ‘conservative values on the war on terror.’

Last month, author Andrew Klavan wrote that the new Batman film is a “paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war.” CNN’s Glenn Beck agreed today, listing off controversial Bush policies he claims were vindicated by the film’s showcase of “conservative values on the war on terror”:

But Batman goes into another country and with a C-130 snatches a guy out, and then throws him back here into Gotham. So there’s rendition. At one point the Morgan Freeman character says to Batman, wait a minute, hang on, you’re eavesdropping on everyone in Gotham? And Batman says, yes, to stop this terrorist. Morgan Freeman says, I can’t be a part of it. And yet Morgan Freeman does become a part of it, and they find the Joker. One of the ways they find the Joker is through eavesdropping. I mean the parallels here of what’s going on is to me stunning. MORE!

Only stunning to you Glenn! Another thing Batman is a FICTIONAL character, like Jack Bauer idiot! Again this is a you pick em type thing...I am leaning towards the GOP with it's bullshit about drilling although that scumbag Muschany is high up on the list!

Since this is getting long and I need to get myself ready for work I leave you with this...From Jesus' General:

Shanking for God

Paul Crouch
Trinity Broadcasting Network

Dear Pastor Crouch,

I know you're a big supporter of Phil Aguilar and his Set Free Soldiers Christian Motorcycle Gang. You've had him on your show, held fundraisers for him, and partnered with him on a couple of faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. It's too bad you closed them down. The aversion therapy approach you seemed to have used sounds interesting. I know I'd stop using crack if I had to blow a counselor to get it.

I imagine the news that police arrested Pastor Phil and six other Set Free Soldiers on murder charges must have been quite a shock at first, but I hope that after you learned more about the killings you understood them for what they were: battles in the war between good and evil.

Certainly, it's easy to see how the killings occurred. Phil and a half dozen Christian one-percenters are sitting in a biker bar, drinking, witnessing, and shooting pool and then, in walks their sworn enemies, the Hell's Angels. The Set Free gang begins rebuking the Hell's Angels; perhaps even going so far as to begin performing exorcism rites. Suddenly, one of Satan's minions beans a godly biker in the head with a pool ball and the next thing you know, Jesus' warriors are stabbing everyone in site.

I've bet you found yourself in a similar situation many times. No doubt you've thought about shanking that masturbating bastard, Swaggart, more times than you can count.

You know, maybe you ought to consider creating a reality series for Phil and the gang if they get out. You could show them traveling around to biker bars hunting for Hells Angels to stab. Heck, you could even join them--it'd give you an excuse to wear leather. I bet you'd like that.

Heterosexually yours,

Gen. JC Christian, patriot

I know I am missing some stuff and it is probably some good stuff I had planned to talk about today but hey I am pressed for time and I can't catch it all. As usual let me know what I missed, got wrong or anything you want or need clarity on. Have a great weekend in spite of them!
